Fender, Schmender
Since most of us fix or make guitars, we have probably heard something about the cease and desist letters Fender has sent out concerning the Stratocaster. I thought I would offer some thoughts. As always, caveat emptor. There are three basic ways to protect intellectual property under Federal law. Patent, trademark, and copyright. Each protects different things, and has different underlying legal theories. Lets begin with pate…
What do you do when you get a knock off guitar on your bench?
I have a "fender", which I believe is a knock off, in my shop. I didn't immediately catch that it was a fake, but as I worked on it it's become fairly undeniable, in my opinion. For the neck — the fretboard is made from two pieces of rosewood, the headstock decal doesn't look right, the truss rod is metric, the tuners don't look like a MIA Fender, and there's no walnut plug on the truss access. The model name being wrong is suspicio…

1973 Jazz Bass Refret Issues with Pulling Frets
Looking for some guidance here – I have a 1973 Jazz Bass with maple fretboard and fretboard binding in for a re-fret. The finish is of course built up thick and crackly along the frets, and although they’re not seated too nicely, the first few came out really tough and chippy even after scoring the finish really well. I’m aware that Fenders were fretted sideways until 1982, but because of the binding, pushing them out sideways is not an…
bass VI wiring question
Hello, I am building a bass VI for a customer. As with a Fender Bass VI he wants a control plate with 4 slide switches. 1 on/off switch for each of the 3 pickups, but with the 4the switch he wants to control the phase of the middle pickup. Any suggestions as how I should wire that? thanks!
When chips happen--customers, expectations, and responsibility
Hey all, I am really enjoying digging through the looth group. I have not yet watched all the ding kings vids or read all the amazing comments and articles here, but I've been appreciating some of the loothing for dollars stuff, seeing other people's intake sheets, discussions about dealing with customers, and it led me to this question: How do people deal with customer expectations, liability, and the inevitable accidents that can happ…
Fender P Bass-Plus -- Switch short?
Friends - I have an unexpected problem with my 1989 P Bass-Plus. I suspect that the Series-Parallel switch is grounding out (ie, short circuiting) when the 3-position pickup selector is in the P pickup position (disengaging the J pickup and all 3 pickups). I am waiting for feedback from Fender as to whether there is both a wiring diagram for this bass and the possibility of getting a direct replacement switch. Has anyone worked on these…
Switch out output jack on an active P Bass?
Hi Gang, Has anyone switched out the plastic, 8 pin box output 18 volt active/battery switch output jack on a P Bass special for a standard TRS output jack or some other? I just got off the phone with Fender and they don't make this anymore and they recommend replacing with another plastic box from Molex and are sending a wiring diagram. The problem with all this is the plastic boxes have wimpy thin spring steel and wear out quickly.…
7 Lug Tone Pot?
I have a Fender Jazz Bass Special in. Looking to upgrade some caps and resistor per client. I found this "TBX"? tone pot inside. I don't think I've encountered one with the additional lug on the back end. Any help as to if this is a TBX or similar and the functions of the pot? Thanks!
Seeking 1970 Fender Jazz Bass Pickups
I realize this is a long shot, a local musician has a 1970 Fender Jazz Bass he bought as original. He recently found out the pickups had been replaced. Other than Reverb, does anyone k ow of a set or where else these may be found? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Owner wants to try to at least be period correct and as close to original as he can.
missing ferrule and screw on Fender branded Schaller lite bass tuner
Hi gang, I am looking, without success so far, for a ferrule and string on this gold fender tuner (made by schaller). Neither company has the spare part and I couldn't source it anywhere. Tips? Do you have something like it in a spare parts bin? I don't have a lathe but I could bribe a friend to make one if I can't find it. And the screw! Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. Ciao, Max
