Introducing the NutBuster

I have been using Ted Bergstrand's online nut calculator on Benchmuse.com which is excellent. It allows you to have a consistent gap between each strings vs the progressive gap that the Stewmac rule gives you. Or you can do consistent centers to the strings.

I have definitely found measuring the nut with calipers to work a lot better than the stewmac rule and don't use the rule anymore.

I wanted some additional functionality and used AI (which I hate, a whole other story) to make a version to sit on my desktop. I have limited internet in my shop so I like that it's on my computer. I asked Ted if it was ok to share and he said no problem.

So anyway, here's the NutBuster. Some features:

1) It will allow any nut up to 13 strings for single strings and 16 for double courses so you can do extended range instruments and mandolins. You can also do triple courses up to 12 strings.

2) You can copy and paste any string set into the quick add box and it will parse the strings for you. You can take a table with extraneous data from a website and it will pull out the string gauges and ignore the rest (even if the data set has mm and inches in it, like this table: https://www.stringsbymail.com/daddario-exl140-8-xl-nickel-wound-electric-guitar-light-heavy-10-74-7961.html)

It will normally sort strings from the thinnest to thickest, but if you click "mandolin mode" in the quick add, it will put the strings in the order you pasted them.

3) you can control the gap between string sets for mandolins, 12 strings, etc

4) it shows you the distances from both the high and low side of the nut.

5) You can switch from mm to inches at any time and all the values will update.

6) You can save a preset set of strings and it will save it to your program and it will be there when you restart it.

7) I just added a setting for triple courses for the Tiple weirdos.

At least, I hope it does all that. I haven't used it extensively yet but it seems to work. Feel free to try and break it and let me know if something isn't working. It's pretty trivial to update it.

Just save the file to your desktop, when you click on it, it should open in your web browser.

Anyway, I still hate AI but this will save me a lot of time.
